Data Harbor is leveraging IoT technology to revolutionize the way hotels and resorts manage their water usage, providing new and highly beneficial approaches to reduce waste, increase efficiency, reduce labor and limit expenses.

Smart Water Monitoring

Data Harbor’s customized remote monitoring systems utilize IoT-enabled sensors which are strategically placed throughout a hotel’s water supply and distribution system to provide real-time data on water usage, pressure, and quality. This information brings awareness and control to hotel staff allowing them to identify leaks, monitor consumption, and optimize water usage.

Data Harbor’s team assesses the existing infrastructure and depending on the layout, framework and mechanics provides a solution that will deliver the highest return. These IoT sensors use different technologies, such as ultrasonic, electromagnetic, or pressure to measure water usage, water pressure, and quality. The sensors are connected to a gateway device that transmits data wirelessly to a cloud-based platform.

IoT water management device technology for hotels and resorts

An IoT ultrasonic device uses sound waves to monitor water usage in a non-invasive manner and are a perfect approach to hotels with existing and unchangeable infrastructure. The IoT ultrasonic device is installed on the water supply and distribution system of the hotel. The device can be installed on the main water line and on individual pipes leading to specific areas or rooms in the hotel, or both. These devices use sound waves to measure distances in water pipes and delivery systems to provide highly-accurate data on water flow and utilization rates.

Electromagnetic IoT devices work similar to Ultrasonic. The electromagnetic devices generate a field that is transmitted into the pipes. As water flows through, the sensor measures the disturbance in the field caused by the water. The measurement is used to calculate flow rate which is wirelessly transmitted to the cloud-based platform for analysis.

IoT pressure sensors are installed on existing pipes and systems to measure water pressure changes as water flows through the channels. By detecting the changes caused by the water, the IoT pressure sensor can calculate flow rate and sends this data wirelessly to the cloud-based platform.

Data Harbor can also provide IoT sensors which can be used to measure water quality in a variety of hotel applications. These IoT sensors are installed in the water supply and distribution system to measure water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and total dissolved solids (TDS). The sensors continuously monitor the water quality parameters and collect data at regular intervals. The data is transmitted wirelessly to a cloud-based platform for further analysis.

Understand and use your data

Strong, but easy to use cloud-based analysis software for a remote IoT systems bring immense value to hotels and resorts allowing them to optimize their water consumption and quality. Data Harbor’s IoT sensors and remote monitoring platform equips our hospitality clients with real-time, key insights into their water flow and consumption patterns and identifies areas for improvement. It also enables them to set consumption targets and monitor their progress. Additionally, it can provide alerts and notifications when water quality falls below acceptable levels, enabling hotel staff to take immediate action to address the issue. Good analysis software like Data Harbor’s platform empowers hotels and resorts to manage and reduce their water usage, control expenses, and improve their overall sustainability.

Control your system from anywhere

Paired with remote monitoring, hotels and resorts leveraging a custom system like Data Harbor’s can not only see their data, they can make immediate changes to optimize the system. The ability to remotely control water usage from anywhere is a game-changer for hotels looking to optimize their water consumption and quality. With Data Harbor’s IoT-enabled water management systems, hotel staff can monitor and control water usage from a web or mobile app. This allows staff to adjust water flow rates, turn water on or off, and set automated schedules for different areas of the hotel. The remote control capability also allows staff to respond to issues quickly, such as turning off a valve to stop a leak. This not only saves time and money but also reduces the risk of water damage to the facility and grounds. By remotely controlling water usage from anywhere, hotels can optimize their water consumption, reduce waste, and improve their overall operations.

The results can be downright shocking. Hotels and resorts that partner with a custom remote monitoring system consultant like Data Harbor often see big returns in cost savings. For example, a study conducted by Verdantix found that hotels that implemented water management systems using IoT technology achieved an average cost savings of 11% on their annual water bills. Another study conducted by the Environmental Defense Fund found that implementing water conservation measures, including using IoT sensors and remote monitoring platforms, resulted in savings of up to 15% on water bills for hotels. In addition to cost savings through resource usage reduction, IoT systems like Data Harbor’s allow our clients to reduce the need for manual meter checking, lower maintenance and emergency response and prevent the risk of injury. Finally, IoT systems help hospitality organizations provide precision control and compliance over water use to meet industry water regulations which can be strict depending on their location.

Data Harbor uses multiple factors to determine which technology is best for our hospitality client’s unique situation. After the solution is framed, Data Harbor plans an execution strategy from procurement to install to management and ongoing support. Each client is provided with a custom, cloud-based analysis and control platform to view and manage their system.
